EXPANDING THE ADOPTION OF DIGITAL FABRICATION IN RESEARCH, TEACHING AND OUTREACH THE CASE OF THE FAURB/UFPel LABORATORY
This paper shows what is being done to expand the reach of a digital fabrication laboratory. The laboratory was created in the context of a faculty of architecture, modeled after those of the worldwide network of Fab Labs. The paper starts with the history of the laboratory in question and a theoretical review on Fab Labs and their role, inside and outside the university. Then, we describe the methodology adopted for the expansion of the laboratory's actions, with three scales of action: (1) the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism; (2) the University; (3) the city and region. The results point to the social significance of the Fab Lab in the context in which it operates, demonstrating that it is capable of instigating creation and innovation, based on a dialogical interaction between different university actors and between the university and the community. The diffusion of different representation technologies and the knowledge necessary for their implementation is also considered a positive result of this action.
