Viagens Filosóficas e saber desenhar: relações com a vida militar no Brasil do século XVIII
The present text deals with the relations between the Philosophical Journeys and the mastery of drawing, based on the Scientific Expedition to the captaincies of Pará, Rio Negro, Mato Grosso and Cuiabá that lasted approximately nine years (1783-1792). However, the focus lies on personalities that had the practice of drawing in common, as is the case of naturalist Alexandre Rodrigues, and the military members Codina and José Joaquim Freire, with the latter's works being taken here by the way of example. The purpose is to highlight José Freire's experience as a testimony of the fundamental links between drawing and military life in 18th century Brazil, as proof of a knowledge required of those summoned to the Philosophical Journeys to the southern Portuguese America.
